The advantages of selecting Pea plant for the experiments by Mendel are:
- Pea plants have a short life cycle.
- They are easy to grow and need little care.
- They show several pairs of visible characters with contrasting traits.
- The Pea plants reproduce sexually, in nature, by self pollination. The same flower contains both the male gamete (Pollen) borne by anthers and female gamete (Ovum) lies within the ovary. The pollen travels through the stigma, into style and reaches the ovary to fuse with an ovum to complete fertilisation.
- These plants are easy to control pollination artificially. Self pollination can be prevented by removing anthers from the flowers.
- The pollen from a flower of another plant of the same species can be transferred to the stigma of the flower. Thus cross – pollination is also possible in this plant. The resultant offspring from such cross – pollination is termed as Hybrid
